“Teachers must always be learning.”
-B.K.S. Iyengar, The Tree of Yoga
Before endeavoring to teach Yoga, one would have the firm foundation of Sadhana, practice, encoded into one’s cellular being. Those attending this program will have been practicing Iyengar Yoga both in weekly classes (where possible) and in their own at home.
This course has been designed to support your transition from practitioner-only to practitioner who teaches other practitioners. By attending this program and committing to the course of study you will:
- Refine your understanding of your own asana practice, which is the firm foundation of clear, effective teaching born from direct experience.
- Learn the art of demonstration, instruction, observation and refinement and hone these important teaching skills.
- Expand your understanding of yoga philosophy through the study of classical yoga texts and Mr. Iyengar’s writings so it becomes woven into the fabric of your life and your teaching.
- Study basic anatomy and physiology and learn primary modifications of postures for common conditions (including menstruation) for the Introductory syllabus (Level 1).
The course will cover all of the required knowledge for both Level 1 and Level 2 certifications.
It is designed as a continuing education and mentoring program for students who are interested in teaching, those who are currently teaching and those preparing for assessment at both Level 1 and Level 2.
Those who are considering preparing for Level 1 assessment by IYNAUS are encouraged to take the course for two years. Students are also strongly encouraged to assist a certified Iyengar teacher as preparation for certification if possible.
Taught by Level 3 certified teacher Holly Walck Kostura, this program of study is an opportunity to deepen your commitment to practice and your personal relationship to the philosophy of Yoga.
Holly assisted Joan White in her classes and teacher training at the B.K.S. Iyengar Yoga School of Central Philadelphia for many years. She has been mentoring teachers from around the world since 2010. Holly has devoted more than half of her life to Iyengar Yoga Sadhana and is dedicated to preserving the commitment to excellence in teaching and to promoting the power of Iyengar Yoga practice in her local community and beyond. She was one of the youngest women to receive the title of "Senior Teacher" by the Iyengar Yoga Association of the United States (IYNAUS), having successfully passed all six assessment examinations under the previous system of certification.
Purnima Manghnani began the practice of Iyengar Yoga in 2007 and immediately felt its transformative potential. She was drawn to the discipline, rigor, and integrity of the Iyengar lineage. Born and raised on the Hawaiian Island of O'ahu, Purnima spent five years of study under the Iyengar family in Pune, India at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI), which included assisting in the medical therapeutic classes. She was granted certification (Level II) directly by her beloved Guru, Yogācārya Srī B.K.S. Iyengar. Purnima is currently based in Goa, India and teaches internationally. She is known for inspiring students to apply the practice and study of Yoga as a means for using life's inevitable challenges to take them further on the path. She is grateful for the opportunity to share the gifts of Iyengar Yoga with others.
