“Teachers must always be learning.”
-B.K.S. Iyengar, The Tree of Yoga
Before endeavoring to teach Yoga, one would have the firm foundation of Sadhana, practice, encoded into one’s cellular being. Those attending this program will have been practicing Iyengar Yoga both in weekly classes (where possible) and in their own at home.
This course has been designed to support your transition from practitioner-only to practitioner who teaches other practitioners. By attending this program and committing to the course of study you will:
- Refine your understanding of your own asana practice, which is the firm foundation of clear, effective teaching born from direct experience.
- Learn the art of demonstration, instruction, observation and refinement and hone these important teaching skills.
- Expand your understanding of yoga philosophy through the study of classical yoga texts and Mr. Iyengar’s writings so it becomes woven into the fabric of your life and your teaching.
- Study basic anatomy and physiology and learn primary modifications of postures for common conditions (including menstruation) for the Introductory syllabus (Level 1).
The course will cover all of the required knowledge for both Level 1 and Level 2 certifications.
It is designed as a continuing education and mentoring program for students who are interested in teaching, those who are currently teaching and those preparing for assessment at both Level 1 and Level 2.
Those who are considering preparing for Level 1 assessment by IYNAUS are encouraged to take the course for two years. Students are also strongly encouraged to assist a certified Iyengar teacher as preparation for certification if possible.
Taught by Level 3 certified teachers Holly Walck Kostura and Aretha McKinney Blevins, this program of study is an opportunity to deepen your commitment to practice and your personal relationship to the philosophy of Yoga.
Holly assisted Joan White in her classes and teacher training at the B.K.S. Iyengar Yoga School of Central Philadelphia for many years. She has been mentoring teachers from around the world since 2010. Aretha has assisted Jan Campbell's teacher training in Nashville, TN for many years and Patricia Walden's program in Cambridge, MA. Both Aretha and Holly have been practicing Iyengar yoga for over two decades and are devoted to preserving the commitment to excellence in teaching and to promoting the power of Iyengar Yoga practice in their local communities and beyond. They were some of the youngest women to receive the title of "Senior Teacher" by the Iyengar Yoga Association of the United States (IYNAUS).
